Foot injuries are extremely common. Foot
injuries include fractures, bunions, spurs, corns, etc. Perhaps the most
common problem with feet is heel pain. Inflammation of the connective
tissue on the sole of the foot (plantar fascia) where it attaches to the
heel bone is the most common cause of such pain. Foot injuries can occur in
a variety of ways, and often include injury to the ankle.
| The ankle supports the entire weight of the
body and is particularly susceptible to injury. Ankle sprains and strains,
and ankle fractures are one of the most common injuries treated by
orthopedists. Ankle injuries usually involve a sudden, unexpected, loss of
balance that results in a sharp twist of the ankle. A strain occurs when a
muscle
or tendon overstretches. A sprain is more serious and occurs when
strong connective tissue that connects one bone to another (ligaments)
become overstretched. In some cases, a ligament tears and may pull a
fragment of bone with it. When a piece of bone is pulled away, it is known
as an avulsion fracture. Most sprains and strains are initially treated
with rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Moderate and severe sprains and
strains are often immobilized with a cast or splint. Severe fractures often
require surgical repair. |
